Die kleine, wehrhafte Burg hoch über der Aar wurde im 14. Jahrhundert von den Grafen von Diez-Nassau errichtet. Über die Jahrhunderte verfiel sie, erhalten sind heute noch der Bergfried sowie Teile der Ringmauer. Die Ruine ist nicht nur ein historisches Zeugnis vergangener Zeiten – sie ist auch heute noch ein lebendiger Ort. Alle zwei Jahre (in den ungeraden Jahren) finden hier die beliebten Burgfestspiele statt. Aufgeführt werden unterhaltsame Komödien und Lustspiele in prachtvollen Kostümen von einer der größten Amateurbühnen in Rheinland-Pfalz. Die Anlage liegt direkt am Aartalradweg, etwa 300 Meter vor Holzheim. Die Anfahrt erfolgt über Holzheim bis zur Straße „Schöne Aussicht“, von dort führt ein kurzer Fußweg zur Ruine. Ein lohnender Abstecher für alle, die Natur, Geschichte und besondere Ausblicke verbinden möchten.
The small, fortified castle high above the River Aare was built in the 14th century by the Counts of Diez-Nassau. It fell into disrepair over the centuries; today, the keep and parts of the curtain wall remain. The ruins are not only a historical testament to times gone by – they remain a vibrant place to this day. Every two years (in odd-numbered years), the popular Castle Festival takes place here. Entertaining comedies and farces are performed in magnificent costumes by one of the largest amateur theatre groups in Rhineland-Palatinate. The site is situated directly on the Aartal Cycle Route, about 300 metres before Holzheim. To get there, drive through Holzheim to the street called ‘Schöne Aussicht’; from there, a short walk leads to the ruins. A worthwhile detour for anyone wishing to combine nature, history and stunning views.
