Einen imposanten Blick auf einen noch im Betrieb befindlichen Steinbruch hat man von der Aussichtsplattform „Guck ins Loch“ aus, die die Firma Jost auf ihrem Gelände im Braunfelser Stadtteil Altenkirchen errichtet hat. Abgebaut wird dort Diabas, ein Gestein, das durch untermeerischen Vulkanismus vor rund 400 Millionen Jahren im Devon entstanden ist und wegen seiner oft grünlichen Färbung auch als Grünstein bekannt ist.
You can get an impressive view on the quarry that is still in operation from the “Guck ins Loch” (“Look into the hole”) viewing platform that the Jost company had set up on its premises in the Altenkirchen section of Braunfels. What is mined there is diabas, which was created by volcanic action under the sea during the Devonian period around 400 million years ago and is often called greenstone due to the greenish colouring.
