The casemates - underground gun emplacements - are the core of the fortifications around the Landgrave's Castle. The first gun tower from 1478 - now known as the "Witches' Tower" because of its later use as a prison - is also part of the defense system.

Die Kasematten – unterirdisch angelegte Geschützstände – sind das Kernstück der Befestigungsanlagen rund um das Landgrafenschloss. Auch der erste Geschützturm von 1478 – der wegen seiner späteren Gefängnisnutzung heute als "Hexenturm" bekannt ist – ist Teil der Verteidigungsanlage.
