The castle was built in 1390 by Count Philipp I of Nassau-Weilburg-Saarbrücken – primarily to secure against the Counts of Solms, the then owners of Braunfels Castle. By the 16th century, the castle had lost its strategic significance and continued to decay after the last administrator left. In the 19th century, the ruins were used by the villagers as a quarry, leading to the removal of large portions. Since the establishment of the Burgverein (today's Castle and Heritage Association) in 1975, Burg Philippstein has shone in new splendor after countless restoration efforts.
Die Burg wurde im Jahr 1390 von Graf Philipp I. von Nassau-Weilburg-Saarbrücken erbaut – in erster Linie, um sich gegen die Grafen von Solms abzusichern, die damaligen Besitzer von Schloss Braunfels. Spätestens im 16. Jahrhundert verlor die Burg ihre strategische Bedeutung und verfiel nach dem Abzug des letzten Verwalters immer weiter. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde die Ruine von den Dorfbewohnern als Steinbruch genutzt, so dass weite Teile abgetragen wurden. Seit 1975 der Burgverein (heutiger Burg- und Heimatverein) gegründet wurde, erstrahlt Burg Philippstein nach unzähligen Restaurierungseinsätzen in neuem Glanz.
