The city museum in the heart of the old town is dedicated to the history and present of the city and region. In the historic setting of a former tobacco warehouse, the museum displays archaeological as well as natural history collections and provides insights into long-forgotten crafts. Also worth seeing are the artistically designed costumes from the Werratal, a model of the cityscape around 1750, as well as Hesse's largest shoe and the complete studio of the former imperial court photographer Oscar Tellgmann.
