The marketplace was established between 1703 and 1711 according to plans by the master builder Rothweil as part of the comprehensive redesign of the city and the castle under Count Johann Ernst of Nassau-Weilburg. For this purpose, the former buildings, including the old town hall, the hospital, and the girls' school, were demolished. The affected citizens were offered newly built houses in the suburb as compensation. The nearly square square is defined by the Neptune Fountain. The east side is dominated by the town and castle church, at the southwest corner of which is the old town hall. The remaining sides were originally framed by 13 uniformly designed, two-story residential houses with hipped roofs, arcades, and emphasized cornices. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, there were renovations and new constructions. On the north side, the printing house of the Weilburger Tageblatt was located in house No. 1 from 1924. Several historic inns like "Zur Krone," "Einhorn," and "Ochse" had to give way to the square layout. House No. 13 has special significance, as it has housed the official pharmacy "Zum Engel" since 1712. Its neoclassical furnishings from 1819 are now displayed in the mining and city museum.
