Franz Erhard Walther (* 22. Juli 1939 in Fulda) ist ein deutscher Künstler (Bildhauer, Konzept-, Installations- und Prozesskünstler). Seit seiner Emeritierung als Professor an der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg lebt und arbeitet er wieder in Fulda. Seit einigen Jahren erfährt Walthers Werk eine zunehmende internationale Anerkennung. Er gilt mit seiner partizipativen Kunst als eine der Schlüsselfiguren der Gegenwartskunst. 2017 wurde Franz Erhard Walther bei der Biennale di Venezia mit dem Goldenen Löwen als bester Künstler ausgezeichnet. Für seine Heimatstadt Fulda hat Franz Erhard Walther verschiedene Kunstwerke geschaffen, die im Stadtraum frei zugänglich sind: 5 Raumformen für Fulda In den Jahren 1970/71 und 1993/94 entstanden die Raumformen für Fulda. An fünf Standorten wurden Stahlplatten mit Inschrift verlegt und nach sechs Richtungen ausgerichtet. Die Ortswahl wurde wesentlich durch die Gegebenheiten der Umgebung und den Blickachsen bestimmt, die durch die Leserichtung der auf den Platten eingravierten Worten definiert ist. König-Konrad-Denkmal Anlässlich der 1275-Jahr-Feier der Gründung des Klosters und damit der Stadt Fulda im Jahr 2019, bat Oberbürgermeister Dr. Heiko Wingenfeld den Künstler Franz Erhard Walther das Denkmal für König Konrad I. zu schaffen. Dieser regierte von 911 und 918 und wurde auf seinen Wunsch hin in der damaligen Stiftskirche begraben. Das auf dem Domplatz stehende Denkmal wurde im Dezember 2019 enthüllt. Der mächtige Sandsteinblock steht im gebührenden Abstand zum Dom und weist eine glänzend erscheinende Oberfläche auf. Zunächst wirkt er wie ein riesiges aufgestelltes Buch oder eine moderne Infotafel. Tritt man näher, erkennt man 911 vergoldete Plättchen, welche die Oberfläche des Objekts gliedern. Unten am Ende der Tafeln steht der Schriftzug Koenig Konrad 1 · 911. Bistumsarchiv Einen Blick auf die zeitgenössische Architektur setzt das Gebäude des Bistumsarchiv, das etwas versteckt zwischen Michaelskirche, Generalvikariat und Dompfarrzentrum liegt. Eine Besonderheit ist die Inschrift "Die Ganzheit des Fragments", die von Franz Erhard Walther 2007 für dieses Gebäude geschaffen wurde. Das sagt Franz Erhard Walther über seine Raumformen „Die Maße der Platten sind auf den menschlichen Körper bezogen und haben daher eine Proportion. Proportion enthält auch die verwendete Antiquaschrift. Stahl wurde gewählt, da historisch mit Bedeutung beladene Materialien vermieden werden sollten. Die Werkform – Fünf Raumformen für Fulda – zog ich allen anderen Lösungen aus mehreren Gründen vor: Zuallererst deswegen, weil mir diese Form am unmittelbarsten meiner Forderung: WERK in der Handlung zu entwickeln am nächsten kam und tradierte Erwartungen enttäuschen würde. Darüber hinaus sah ich diese Arbeit als authentische Werkidee der Zeit, und sie enthielt wesentliche Merkmale meiner Gesamtarbeit: großräumige, auf den realen Raum bezogene Dimension, Realzeit, Werk in der Vorstellung, der Körper als Skulptur, offene Werkdefinition.“
Franz Erhard Walther (born July 22, 1939, in Fulda) is a German artist (sculptor, conceptual, installation, and process artist). Since his retirement as a professor at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg, he has been living and working again in Fulda. In recent years, Walther's work has gained increasing international recognition. He is regarded as one of the key figures in contemporary art with his participatory art. In 2017, Franz Erhard Walther was awarded the Golden Lion for Best Artist at the Biennale di Venezia. For his hometown Fulda, Franz Erhard Walther has created various artworks that are freely accessible in the urban space: 5 Spatial Forms for Fulda The spatial forms for Fulda were created in 1970/71 and 1993/94. Steel plates with inscriptions were placed at five locations and aligned in six directions. The choice of locations was significantly determined by the characteristics of the surroundings and the sightlines defined by the reading direction of the words engraved on the plates. King Conrad Monument On the occasion of the 1275th anniversary of the founding of the monastery and thus the city of Fulda in 2019, Mayor Dr. Heiko Wingenfeld commissioned the artist Franz Erhard Walther to create the monument for King Conrad I. He ruled from 911 to 918 and was buried at his request in the former collegiate church. The monument standing in Cathedral Square was unveiled in December 2019. The massive sandstone block stands at an appropriate distance from the cathedral and has a brilliantly appearing surface. At first glance, it resembles a giant open book or a modern information board. Upon closer inspection, one can see 911 gilded plates that divide the surface of the object. At the bottom of the plates, the inscription reads Koenig Konrad 1 · 911. Diocesan Archive A view of contemporary architecture is set by the building of the Diocesan Archive, which is somewhat hidden between the Church of St. Michael, the General Vicariate, and the Cathedral Parish Center. A distinctive feature is the inscription "The Wholeness of the Fragment," created by Franz Erhard Walther in 2007 for this building. This is what Franz Erhard Walther says about his spatial forms “The dimensions of the plates are related to the human body and therefore have a proportion. Proportion also includes the antique font used. Steel was chosen because historically loaded materials should be avoided. The work form – Five Spatial Forms for Fulda – I preferred to all other solutions for several reasons: First of all, because this form came closest to my demand: to develop WORK in action and would disappoint traditional expectations. Moreover, I saw this work as an authentic work idea of the time, and it contained essential characteristics of my overall work: large-scale, real-space-related dimension, real-time, work in imagination, the body as sculpture, open work definition.”
