Die Elisabethkirche in Marburg ist seit dem 13. Jahrhundert das Ziel vieler Pilger, die aus  unterschiedlichen Richtungen über verschiedene Wege anreisten. Der bedeutendste Elisabethpfad mit rund 147 Kilometern Länge ist die Strecke von Frankfurt nach Marburg, die auch heute noch durch den Taunus und Oberhessen führt.  Die heilige Elisabeth selbst nutzte einen Abschnitt dieses Weges, um von Marburg zum  Kloster Altenberg bei Wetzlar zu reisen und dort ihre jüngste Tochter zu besuchen. Der schönste Teil der Strecke beginnt in Oberursel (Taunus). Sie führt von dort über das "Tor zum Taunus" an der Hohen Mark, das Freilichtmuseum Hessenpark, nach Usingen und Waldsolms, vorbei an den Eschbacher Klippen durch das Hüttenberger Land bis zum  Kloster Altenberg im Hessischen Westerwald.
