About: Licht- und Luftbad Niederrad

Sunbathe, barbecue, play in the playground: The small Main Island is the perfect place for a relaxing outing with the whole family. Light and air bath: the name alone sounds promising. And indeed, the "LiLu" is the perfect place to take a break. The small island on the banks of the River Main in Niederrad was created at the end of the 19th century through the construction of locks and served as a river swimming pool from 1900 until the 1950s. When the water quality of the Main increasingly deteriorated, swimming was banned and the swimming pool became the Licht- und Luftbad, a popular excursion destination for Frankfurters. There is enough space on the lawn to meet up with friends for a picnic or simply read a book in peace. Children can let off steam in the playground and the barbecue area smells temptingly of sausages. If you don't want to cook your own barbecue, you can enjoy refreshments at the Ponton LiLu, an architecturally unique café that can be raised on pontoons at high tide.

Licht- und Luftbad: allein der Name klingt schon vielversprechend. Und tatsächlich ist das „LiLu“ das perfekte Plätzchen für eine Auszeit. Die kleine Maininsel am Niederräder Ufer entstand Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts durch den Bau von Schleusen und diente von 1900 bis in die 1950er Jahre als Flussschwimmbad. Als sich die Wasserqualität des Mains zunehmend verschlechterte, wurde das Baden verboten und aus dem Schwimm- wurde das Licht- und Luftbad, ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel der Frankfurter*innen. Auf der Wiese ist genug Platz, um sich mit Freunden zum Picknick zu treffen oder einfach in Ruhe ein Buch zu lesen. Kinder toben sich auf dem Spielplatz aus und auf dem Grillplatz duftet es verführerisch nach Würstchen. Wer nicht selbst am Grill stehen will, kann sich im Ponton LiLu stärken, einem architektonisch ganz besonderen Café, das bei Hochwasser auf Pontons angehoben werden kann.
