About: Jewish Museum Frankfurt, Jüdisches Museum Frankfurt

Im Rothschild-Palais dokumentieren Exponate das jüdische Leben der Stadt. Und geben Einblick in das Leben von Anne Frank und ihrer Familie. „Wir sind jetzt“. Das ist der Titel der Dauerausstellung des Jüdischen Museums. 2020 eröffnete das Museum rundum erneuert, ein moderner Lichtbau ergänzt nun das historische Rothschild-Palais zu einem der spannendsten Architektur-Ensembles des Museumsufers – samt großzügiger öffentlicher Bibliothek, koscherem Café und durchdachtem Ausstellungskonzept. Auf drei Etagen widmen sich verschiedenste Exponate der Zeit von 1800 bis zur Gegenwart. Ganz oben erfahren Gäste, wie sich Frankfurts jüdische Gemeinde seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis in die Gegenwart entwickelt hat; eine Etage tiefer liegt der Fokus auf verschiedenen Strömungen des Judentums, ihren Ritualen und Traditionen. Die Ausstellung im ersten Stock erzählt schließlich die Geschichte von drei verschiedenen Frankfurter Familien. Eine davon ist die Bankiersfamilie Rothschild, eine andere die Kaufmannsfamilie Frank. Das Familie-Frank-Zentrum ist den Briefen, Fotos und persönlichen Gegenstände aus dem Besitz von Anne Frank und ihrer Familie gewidmet: Berührende Zeugnisse in einem Museum, das Leid, Verfolgung und Schoa thematisiert, sich aber auch als Ort lebendiger jüdischer Kultur präsentiert. Zum Museum gehört ein weiteres Haus in der Judengasse am Börneplatz, das von den Ursprüngen jüdischen Lebens in Frankfurt zeugt: 1460 hatte der Stadtrat die jüdische Bevölkerung in diesen Bereich entlang der alten Stadtmauer verdrängt. Das Museum Judengasse zeigt nicht nur die Überreste von fünf Häusern aus dieser Zeit, sondern auch, wie sich die Frankfurter Judengasse zu einem der bedeutendsten Zentren jüdischen Lebens in Europa entwickelte.

One floor below, the focus is on the various currents of Judaism, their rituals and traditions. Finally, the exhibition on the first floor tells the story of three different Frankfurt families. One of them is the Rothschild banking family, another is the Frank merchant family. The Frank Family Centre is dedicated to the letters, photos and personal belongings of Anne Frank and her family. Touching testimonies in a museum that focuses on suffering, persecution and the Shoah, but also presents itself as a place of living Jewish culture. The museum also includes another house in the Judengasse on Börneplatz, which bears witness to the origins of Jewish life in Frankfurt. In 1460, the city council pushed the Jewish population into this area along the old city wall. The Judengasse Museum not only shows the remains of five houses from this period, but also how Frankfurt's Judengasse developed into one of the most important centres of Jewish life in Europe.
